Being a born and bred Johannesburger with a penchant for Sunday afternoons I think it apt for me to share with you, the means to enjoy a perfect Sunday afternoon. I have endeavoured to cater for most tastes here, enjoy the read.

The best place to lunch at is 4th Avenue, Parkhurst. This is undoubtedly one of the most popular spots to take lunch at on any given Sunday. Lunch time can be very busy but luckily the street is lengthy so you’ll definitely find a good meal somewhere on the street. Most restaurants offer al fresco dining and make provisions for a comfortable dining experience in the winter time. Restaurants on 4th represent a wide diversity of characters and tastes , one won’t be disappointed with the service or standard of any of them.

A wide variety of shops find themselves among the restaurants, from antiquities, designer home wares and clothing to art galleries, this street will not let the discerning shopper down. There’s always something appealing to see. Johannesburg and Sandton CBDs are easily accessible from Parkhurst – a suburb finding itself amongst the older more affluent suburbs of Johannesburg

Near to Parkhurst are the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens – the ideal place for a long and tranquil walk. My favourite part of these huge gardens is the rose garden although this huge property has a wide variety of landscapes to enjoy. This beautiful installation features a series of fountains ducts and pools which traverses each level of the gardens. At the bottom of the rose gardens, an impressively large pool and fountain shooting water some 10 metres high into the air. To the east of the botanical gardens, Emmarentia Dam is popular for canoeists and children enjoy feeding the ducks and geese. There are plenty of trees and large spaces which make a lot of places to enjoy a picnic. Taking a long walk through these gardens exposes you to views of the city and suburbs, really imposing the greenery that Johannesburg has such a wealth of.

Lapa Fo restaurant has the largest veriety of pizzas in Johannesburg, very near to the gardens, it is located on 143 Barry Hertzog Avenure. It will take you years to come across a variety like this again. Percy the owner; was sent from working holiday in London to Sicily for 6 months to learn the art of creating pizza, he then returned to London to assist in the establishment of a pizza business and then returned home and opened Lapa Fo, today there are some 70 odd pizzas on the menu as well as the special mentions on the boards. The menu is themed in a continental style and offers a lot more than the expected fare traditionally on offer, expect pleasing fusion and innovation in every dish. For any appreciator of a unique and pleasing experience I recommend Lapa Fo.

These suburbs are all conveniently located in the Northern central Johannesburg suburbs. Travelling to and from Sandton hotel will take 10 to 20 minutes and all the places I have mentioned are within a 5 minute drive from each other. Sandton accommodation provides travellers an alternative to the big anonymous hotel and with all listed establishments being star graded by the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa, your stay in one of these establishments will be the perfect way to stay in Johannesburg
